Faux leather is designed to reproduce aspects of leather's appearance using synthetic materials. Sewport lists names including pleather, artificial leather and synthetic leather, while discussing polymer-based alternatives used for jackets, bags and upholstery. A convincing embossed surface can therefore coexist with a composition quite different from genuine hide.

Touch may offer clues, but appearance and feel are not a complete material test. Check the composition and backing rather than treating every grained surface as the same substance. The label also helps distinguish alternative leather constructions whose cleaning needs and durability may differ.
