Milk cotton is associated with casein, a protein found in milk. Sewport describes both casein-based materials and versions blended with acrylonitrile-related components. Despite the familiar word cotton, the name does not establish that a fabric is made from the cellulose fibre harvested from cotton plants.

A composition statement is therefore essential when identifying the textile. The actual ingredients help distinguish different products marketed under milk-fibre terminology. Softness or a cotton-like handle can explain the marketing language, but those sensory qualities do not replace information about the fibre's protein origin and any additional materials.
