Baize is woven cloth that receives a felted finish, traditionally using wool. Sewport describes a material associated with billiards tables, writing surfaces and other practical or decorative uses. Its softened surface does not mean it was formed by the same direct matting route as ordinary felt.

Green is familiar but not compulsory, and cotton or synthetic versions also exist. Fibre choice and finishing therefore matter alongside construction when comparing the durability and handle of particular baize products.
