Woolmark's Soft Classic Merino process treats wool top before spinning to make fibres less rigid and more receptive to reactive dyes. Subsequent dyeing and softener application develop the final hand and brightness. The described yarns are intended to be bulkier and softer than their untreated counterparts.

The process demonstrates that raw-fibre diameter is only one contributor to a fabric's feel. Internal treatment, yarn development and finishing also play roles. Any resulting hand-washable or machine-washable claim still needs to come from the finished garment's label, because the effect does not establish identical care for every construction.
