Silk Fabric Characteristics
Silk is a fiber, while many familiar silk names describe the fabric made from it. A glossy surface, a sheer layer, and a crisp textured cloth can therefore belong to the same broad fiber family. Some of those textile constructions also use synthetic materials, making the actual composition essential to the comparison.
A satin-style surface
Charmeuse is recognizable by a shiny face and a duller reverse. The source describes silk versions as well as fabrics made with polyester or rayon. The smooth, lustrous effect therefore does not prove that a fabric contains silk; the surface construction and the raw fiber need to be identified separately.

Drape and intended use
Charmeuse is used for flowing clothing, eveningwear, and bedding. Its smooth appearance helps explain those uses, while the source also notes differences in weight among silk fabrics. When comparing charmeuse with a plain-woven textile, consider the sheen and how the cloth falls as well as the composition. Two similarly glossy products can have different origins and different handling requirements.
