Cotton Fabric Types

Cotton names can describe different things: the plant variety, the fiber quality, or the construction of the cloth. Pima and Supima concern the fiber, while lawn and chambray describe fabrics made from yarn. Separating those layers makes comparisons more useful than placing every cotton name in one undifferentiated list.

From seed to yarn

Cotton comes from the soft fibers surrounding cotton seeds. Those fibers are cleaned, spun into yarn, and made into many different textiles. A cotton label therefore identifies the raw material rather than a single weave or thickness. The same plant fiber can appear in airy clothing, substantial household fabrics, and everyday garments.

What changes the feel

Cotton is valued for softness, absorbency, and breathability. Its final behavior also depends on yarn and fabric construction. A fine cotton cloth should not be judged by the same expectations as a thick woven fabric. Looking at the actual textile alongside its fiber description gives a more useful picture than relying on the word cotton alone.
